What is humour?

So, first of all lets explore what humour actually is, how would you describe it? People of all ages and cultures respond to humour. It is, after all, a human trait - in fact, our ability to laugh sets us apart from other animals.

The majority of people are able to be amused, to laugh or smile at something funny - this is commonly referred to as having a "sense of humour". (If I were English, I would probably take this opportunity to make some dry and somewhat derogatory remark about the Germans but as I’m Dutch, I will refrain from doing so.)

Having a “sense of humour” is the ability to experience humour, although the extent to which an individual will find something “humorous”, or funny, depends on many things, including age, level of education, intelligence and very importantly, context, timing and culture. (The earlier remark about the Germans will therefore probably be very funny if you are British but not so, if you are German!)

There are many theories about what humour is and what social function it serves. If I had to create my own definition out of all of those available to us, I would venture to say the following:

“Having a sense of humour is the ability to smile or laugh, in either a ‘funny ha-ha’ or a wry kind of way, at either oneself, a situation, a memory, an experience or someone else’s amusing or comic communication or behaviour.”
